Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN)

National Level Addressing Grid - Technical Document

Core Concept

DIGIPIN is an alphanumeric offline grid system that divides India into uniform 4m×4m units. Each unit gets a unique 10-digit code derived from latitude and longitude.

Hierarchical Encoding

The encoding uses 16 symbols (2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,C,F,J,K,L,M,P,T) across 10 levels, creating 16^10 unique cells within India's bounding box.

Precision Grid

Level-10 cells measure approximately 3.8m×3.8m, providing precise location identification with directional properties built into the naming pattern.

Introduction & Design Approach

1
Initiative by Department of Posts

The Department of Posts has undertaken an initiative to establish a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for a standardized, geo-coded addressing system in India.

2
Code Architecture

Uses hierarchical 4×4 grid partitioning at each of 10 levels within bounding box covering longitude 63.5°–99.5°E and latitude 2.5°–38.5°N.

3
DIGIPIN Layer

Acts as an addressing reference system available offline, enabling logical location identification with directional properties.

4
Collaboration

DIGIPIN serves as the foundation layer of this DPI, developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and NRSC, ISRO.

Why DigiPin is Better Than Pincode
4×4m Precision

DigiPin: 4×4 meter precision
Pincode: Area-level (~100m)

Addressing Scope

DigiPin: Exact location point
Pincode: General delivery area

Two-Way Conversion

DigiPin: Encode & decode coordinates
Pincode: One-way addressing only

Technology

DigiPin: ISRO satellite precision
Pincode: Manual postal zones

Delivery Efficiency

DigiPin: Direct to 4×4m location
Pincode: Area-based, requires local knowledge

Address Uniqueness

DigiPin: Unique for every 4×4m
Pincode: Shared by entire area

About DigiPin Summary

DIGIPIN is India's revolutionary digital addressing system developed by India Post in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO. It provides 4×4 meter precision addressing across India using a hierarchical grid system with 10 levels of partitioning. The system works offline and complements the existing PIN code system.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is DIGIPIN?

DIGIPIN (Digital Postal Index Number) is a nationwide geo-coded addressing system developed by India Post in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad and ISRO. It provides 4×4 meter precision addressing across India.

How accurate is DIGIPIN?

DIGIPIN provides 4×4 meter precision (approximately 3.8m×3.8m). The accuracy depends on the input coordinates and follows a 10-level hierarchical grid partitioning system.

What are the valid coordinates for DIGIPIN?

DIGIPIN works within India's bounding box: Latitude 2.5° to 38.5° North, Longitude 63.5° to 99.5° East. Coordinates outside this range cannot generate a DIGIPIN.
